I was heartbroken to learn of the passing of Ricky Hatton, a true local legend, who died at his home in Gee Cross, Hyde, earlier this week. His sudden death at just 46 has come as a profound shock to our community and far beyond.

Yesterday morning, I signed the book of condolence for Ricky at Hyde Town Hall and took a moment to read some of the messages already left. The depth of personal connection he had with people, and the impact he made on their lives, was truly remarkable.

Ricky was more than a world champion boxer. He was a proud son of Hyde who never forgot his roots. Whether it was mentoring young fighters, promoting mental health awareness, or simply being a friendly face around town, Ricky gave back generously. He even brought his friend Muhammad Ali to Hyde – a moment that still lives in local memory. He made Hyde and Tameside proud, and he will always be remembered as one of our own.

The tributes shared over the past week, from across the world, have been deeply moving. At such a painful time for his family and friends, I hope they can take some comfort in knowing how widely he was loved, and how profoundly respected he will always be.

My deepest sympathies go to Ricky’s family, friends, and all at Hatton Boxing. Goodnight to one of a kind.
