One year ago today I was thrilled to be appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. Since then I have:
  • Succeeded in our #CancelTheCut campaign to extend the Universal Credit uplift the Tories would have cut this week- but we need it extended til UC is scrapped & fixed
  • Pushed to extend the uplift to legacy benefits to end the two tier discrimination in our social security system and get a better deal for disabled people
  • Called on the Government to apologise over the free school meals scandal. It shouldn’t take Marcus Rashford & local businesses to end holiday hunger
  • Campaigned to extend funeral payment support, to ensure bereavement does not deepen poverty
  • Fought for greater support to prevent wider spread youth unemployment post-Covid-19
  • Achieved widespread support from business and charities for our proposals for greener pensions investments
  • Exposed the Government’s cruelty in families of NHS workers lost to coronavirus who receive a compensation payment then losing their eligibility for welfare support
This year has shown more acutely than ever how important it is that governments are there for their people at a time of crisis. As we look forward I will never rest from holding them to account and pushing for work and pension systems which work for everyone, in good times and in bad, and crafting a bold Labour alternative.
