The images shared on social media of the food parcels received by parents on low income are pitiful.
Last week, myself and Labour colleagues are called on the Government to trust parents to choose the best food and supplies for their child at the most convenient local shop and switch to cash payments for families with children who would usually receive free school meals. This Government just keeps on letting families down and insulting them. Our social security system should be a safety net but it has far too many holes in it. Giving the funding directly to families would support parents in making the best choices on how to look after their children during an unprecedented crisis.
