Research from Joseph Rowntree Foundation this week revealed the true extent of child poverty in the UK. Their Destitution in the UK 2020 report makes sobering reading, showing that even before the COVID-19 outbreak destitution was rapidly growing in scale and intensity. No British child should go without food or clothing. We need a social security system that means hard times don’t mean a living nightmare. The government must do more to support struggling families who are facing real hardship this winter. They must see sense and scrap the planned cut to Universal Credit, which will take £20 a week from six million families. You can read more on my response in the Mirror.
