STALYBRIDGE and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds has called on leading supermarkets to take greater responsibility for recycling.
Supermarkets have already taken significant steps to improve resource efficiency and improve the environmental impact of their industry.
But Mr Reynolds says he would like to see supermarkets committing to go much further by only selling products, if they are willing to be responsible for the recycling of the packaging.
Mr Reynolds has outlined the idea in House magazine, which is circulated to every Member of Parliament each week.
He believes the move would encourage supermarkets to work closely with their suppliers to reassess the quantity of packaging used and the nature of the materials used in packaging.
And he believes it is the sort of measure necessary if we are to significantly decrease the amount we consume and increase the amount we recycle.
