Your right to vote
The electoral register is a list of names of all those people eligible to vote. A new register is published every 1 December, but people can add their names throughout the year. You may register to vote if you are:
- living at an address in Tameside
- 18 years old or over during the life of the register
- a British or Commonwealth citizen
- a citizen of the Irish Republic or other European Union state not otherwise disqualified from registration
However, the Government has recently introduced a new £80 fine for people who fail to go on the electoral register if you are asked to do so. I am keen to ensure that nobody forgets to register.
How do I check I am on the register?
You can call Tameside council on 0161 342 3036 and ask if you are on the register.
If I am not on the register, how do I register?
If you aren't on the electoral register, you can't vote. You can register to vote here: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
The Electoral Commission has more on elections and the importance of voting.
