Referendum result backs 'first past the post'

parliamentA REFERENDUM to determine the voting system used in Parliamentary elections in the UK has decided there should be no change.

On May 5, voters were asked to choose between the current ‘first past the post' system and the ‘alternative voting' system.

The result of the ballot showed that most voters preferred to stick with the existing system.

Commenting on the result Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds - who campaigned for a change to the alternative voting system - said: "From very early on, it did look unlikely that the Referendum would back the move to AV.

"I believed in principle that electing MPs through the AV system would have had a positive effect.

"However the result of the Referendum was overwhelming and I respect that the settled view of the British people is not to change the system.

"Regardless of the voting system we have, my priority will always be to work conscientiously on behalf of my constituents and represent all of them, whoever they vote for."
