TAMESIDE councillor Jonny Reynolds has been selected as the prospective Labour Party candidate for the Stalybridge and Hyde constituency.
Cllr Reynolds, who was formerly a political assistant to James Purnell MP, has represented the Longdendale ward for three years. And last night he was named as the constituency’s prospective parliamentary candidate.
“It’s a great privilege to be selected to stand for the Labour Party in Stalybridge and Hyde,” said Cllr Reynolds, who lives in Mottram.
“Stalybridge and Hyde has been proudly served by James Purnell for many years now, and his record in national politics will be a tough act to follow.”
The selection process followed the decision by James Purnell MP not to stand at the next General Election. And the result was announced to members last night (Tuesday), following a ballot of Labour Party members living in the constituency.
Commenting on the selection Stalybridge and Hyde MP James Purnell said: “I am delighted that Jonny has been selected as the next parliamentary candidate for Stalybridge and Hyde. I want to congratulate Peter Wheeler and Dr Kailash Chand for running good campaigns - they are both a credit to the Labour Party.
"Jonny is a committed member of the Labour Party, who already has the respect of party members on a local and national level.
“He is a popular and hard-working local councillor who has acted tirelessly to represent the views of residents in Longdendale. And – if elected as Member of Parliament – I believe his energy and determination will have a real impact on those living in the constituency.
“I know that serving as Member of Parliament for Stalybridge and Hyde is a huge privilege. And as I look around our community, I am proud of the difference the Labour government has made here.
“Investment in our health services means waiting times have been reduced. All our secondary schools are being rebuilt or refurbished. And, families and young people across the borough are benefiting from measures such as the National Minimum Wage, New Deal and the Future Jobs Fund.
“But there is still much to do. And Jonny would be an effective MP who would ensure the voice of Stalybridge and Hyde was heard in Westminster and who would continue to fight for a fair future.
“In the ‘80s and ‘90s the Tories completely forgot about areas like ours. But in the run-up to the General Election I will be campaigning alongside Jonny to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
Stalybridge and Hyde CLP chair Peter Robinson said: “I would like to thank the candidates for running an honest and engaging competition to represent Stalybridge and Hyde as our candidate at the General Election.
“In Jonathan Reynolds, we have a candidate who has proven his campaigning qualities, energy and passion to represent this constituency. During the election campaign, the people of Stalybridge and Hyde will be able to see for themselves what an excellent Member of Parliament Jonathan Reynolds will make.
“James Purnell has been an excellent MP, representing the people of Stalybridge and Hyde up to the highest levels of Government, making sure they got a fair deal.
“I’m delighted Jonathan Reynolds will be able to continue that fight for a Future Fair For All.”
