MP Reynolds welcomes free festive parking

MOVES to relax parking charges in the run-up to Christmas have been welcomed by Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds.
Tameside Council has just announced that parking charges will be waived at 10 car parks across the borough in December.

That means festive shoppers will be able to pop-in to local town centres, like Hyde and Stalybridge, without the additional cost of parking their cars.
And MP Jonathan Reynolds hopes it will encourage residents to support their local high streets in the run-up to Christmas.
He said: "I am delighted that the council has decided to offer free parking at a number of car parks in the run-up to Christmas.
"This means shoppers will be able to support their local high streets without the additional cost of parking their cars.
"Traders tell me that they believe parking charges can be a deterrent to shoppers, who can opt for out of town or internet shopping rather than paying to park their cars.
"I hope this will encourage shoppers to look again at the range of shops available and the calendar of events that are on offer in Hyde and Stalybridge over the festive period.
"High streets across the country are feeling the pressures of the current economic climate – including those in our neighbourhoods. This is a simple move that could make a difference locally and I am delighted the council has taken this action."
Commenting on the decision Cllr Peter Robinson, the council’s executive member for transport and development, has said: "We want to make it as convenient and appealing as possible for people to do their Christmas shopping in Tameside and support local traders. We also hope the free parking will attract more visitors from outside the borough.
"Our local towns have much to offer shoppers – from favourite high street retailers to vibrant markets and individual, specialist shops and this is the ideal time of year to showcase what they have to offer and pick up additional trade as well making local Christmas shopping that bit easier for loyal customers."
