STALYBRIDGE and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds is appealing to local residents with a head for heights to join him on a special leap of faith.
Mr Reynolds has agreed to abseil 65ft down the side of the clock tower at Mottram Parish Church, as part of a fund-raising event next month.
And now he is appealing for others to join him, in the hope that the event will raise more than £5000 for the church's work in the Longdendale community.
Mr Reynolds, who is a regular member of the congregation at Mottram Parish Church, said: "I've walked past the church tower many many times - but it has never looked as high as it does since I agreed to take part in the abseil.
"I've never done anything like this before. And I am sure that when it comes to stepping over the edge of the tower I'll be more than a little nervous.
"But this is a great way to raise funds for the Church, which does vital work to care for and support members of the Longdendale community.
"I am pleased to be able to take part - and I hope as many people will join me as possible."
The funds raised by the event will be used to support the work of the Church, which is currently refurbishing a community centre in Broadbottom.
In addition to regular Sunday and mid-week services and more than 50 weddings, funerals and baptisms each year, members of the Church also offer support to the two local Church of England schools and maintain links with missionary and charitable organisations, in the UK and overseas.
During the summer the Church hopes to install heating, flooring and lighting in the Magdalene Centre, Broadbottom, so that it can be wholly used by schools and the wider community throughout the year.
Philip Burrows, vicar of Mottram said: "The local Church brings a sense of Hope and stability to a community in changing times, and we are very grateful for the support and goodwill we receive to help us share the love of God in service and in action to all ages in our neighbourhood."
The sponsored abseil event will be held at Mottram Parish Church on 21st May, between 9am and 12noon.
Anyone wishing to take part will need to register in advance and must commit to raising a minimum of £150 in sponsorship. Places are limited.
