MP Reynolds witnesses life on the frontline

Visit to Afghanistan 2011Jonathan Reynolds MP has returned from a three-day trip to Afghanistan, where he learned first-hand about life on the front line with the armed forces.

The trip was organised by the Ministry of Defence as part of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, which was set up to establish stronger links between the armed forces and parliament.

Mr Reynolds believes the trip was an important opportunity to hear from those who are continuing to serve in Afghanistan.

During the visit the Stalybridge and Hyde MP was briefed on a range of issues, including the reductions in violence that have been achieved, the progress made in rebuilding the country and the creation of the Afghan national army and police force.

He also witnessed a demonstration by counter-IED teams and met with service personnel from all ranks.

Following his return to the UK, Mr Reynolds said: "Our armed forces do an important job – and I was keen to take this opportunity to learn more about their contribution in Afghanistan.

"As part of the visit I spoke to those currently serving there about their work – as well as finding out more about issues such as the quality of equipment and medical services.

"There are a significant number of people in our armed forces from the Stalybridge and Hyde area. It’s because of the number of constituents who have served there - and in some cases who have been killed or injured – that I felt it was so important to go."

Jonathan was one of 22 MPs who visited Afghanistan as part of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme visit.
