MP Reynolds takes steps to highlight diabetes

Launch of campaign to highlight diabetes testingSTALYBRIDGE and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds is one of a number of MPs who are taking steps to highlight diabetes – by wearing pedometers.

Physical activity and a healthy diet are key in the prevention of Type 2 diabetes. And Jonathan Reynolds is one of a number of MPs who have helped launch a campaign to promote diabetes testing.

As part of the campaign, Jonathan agreed to take the test for Type 2 diabetes, which he found to be quick and simple. In addition he’s one of a number of MPs who have agreed to wear a pedometer, to measure the number of steps taken during a Parliamentary Week.

It has been estimated that the NHS spends £1 million an hour on diabetes related illnesses and it is estimated that more than one million people in the UK are unaware that they have the condition.

Following the launch of the campaign, Jonathan said: “Diabetes can be serious – so diagnosis it really important. That’s why I’m delighted to be able to back this campaign.

“Physical activity and diet can be crucial factors determining whether you develop Type 2 diabetes – which we should all be aware of.

“Wearing a pedometer to measure the steps we take around parliament is a fun way of highlighting the importance of exercise and I am pleased to take part. However my total may turn out to be a bit low – as I keep forgetting to wear it.”

The MPs taking part in the campaign are being encouraged to wear the pedometers by Silver Star, a charity which campaigns to raise diabetes awareness.

The charity run Mobile Diabetes Units (MDU) that carry out diabetes testing at community centres, schools, work places and other organisations. They say they seek to promote culturally sensitive healthcare, with particular regard to the high prevalence of diabetes in the major towns and cities of Britain.
