MP Reynolds is top of the class at Mottram Show

Jonathan Reynolds' vegetable patchMP Jonathan Reynolds came top of the class when he entered his home-grown vegetables into Mottram Show.

Jonathan started to grow vegetables in the back garden of his Stalybridge home for the first time this year.

He was so pleased with his first crop that he entered some of his potatoes, peas and runner beans into Mottram Show.

He was stunned when he was awarded first prize in the Show's First Time Exhibitors class.

"I've been going to Mottram Show for years," said Mr Reynolds, MP for Stalybridge and Hyde. "It is a fantastic celebration of the area's agricultural heritage and traditions, which brings the whole community together.

"It continues to be an opportunity for farmers to show the highest standards in livestock and produce and it gives amateurs like me the chance to have a go too.

"I only started to grow my own vegetables a few months ago, when we moved into a house that already had a vegetable patch. Since then I've found there's a real pleasure in seeing things grow.

"Growing something that would be good enough simply to be  accepted for Mottram Show was a success in itself for me this year. I never imagined I was in with a chance of first place."

This year Jonathan has been growing a range of vegetables, including sweetcorn, peas,  parsnips, peppers and cucumbers.

To enter the First Time Exhibitors class, exhibitors had to enter three different types of vegetable.

Jonathan entered some potatoes, some peas and some runner beans. He won the class with a score of 35 points - just one point higher than the next placed entry.
