MP Reynolds backs Big Energy Week

Big Energy Week 2012MP Jonathan Reynolds has backed a campaign designed to help people cut the cost of their fuel bills.

Citizens Advice’s Big Energy Week recognises that people are struggling to pay rising gas and electricity bills with stretched household budgets.

The organisation knows people are already looking for ways to save money on their energy bills.

Their Big Energy Week campaign offers practical advice – to cut bills and receive any financial support available. And this week Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds backed the campaign, when it was launched in Parliament.

"I know from my own advice surgeries what a worry fuel bills are," said Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds.

"People tell me how concerned they are by the increase in their bills and they have real fears about how they will meet the payments.

"That’s why I am pleased to be able to support this Big Energy Week campaign, which will provide much needed help and advice to those who are worried about their fuel costs."

Advice from the campaign includes ensuring consumers are on the best tariff and encouraging customers to visit an accredited ‘switching website’ to investigate whether energy could be purchased more cheaply elsewhere.

The campaign also encourages householders to save money by insulating their homes, as well as saving energy by switching off lights and electrical appliances and turning down the thermostat by 1C.

It also suggests investigating whether struggling residents are entitled to benefits or tax credits that would help increase household budgets. And it encourages anyone who is struggling to pay their bills to contact their supplier as quickly as possible.

Following the launch of the campaign, Citizens Advice chief executive Gillian Guy said: "We know hikes in prices have put extra pressure on people’s budgets at a time when money is already tight. Day-in, day-out our Bureaux help people who can’t afford their fuel bills.

"We’re worried that some people are struggling unnecessarily because they’re not on the best deal, live in homes that haemorrhage heat or are not getting all of the financial help available to them.

"More and more people are coming to us for advice on how they can save money on their energy bills.　 Through Big Energy Week we hope to help lots of people cut their fuel bills and ease their money worries."
