PETITION: KEEP ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE ROYAL MAIL SORTING OFFICE OPEN
JOINT CAMPAIGN WITH ANGELA RAYNER MP & JONATHAN REYNOLDS MP
I was very concerned to learn that Royal Mail are conducting a feasibility study into the closure of Ashton-Under-Lyne Delivery Office. Together with Ashton MP Angela Rayner, I will fight this tooth and nail.
I am opposed to this closure in the strongest possible terms, not least because approximately half of all Stalybridge and Hyde constituents would be adversely effected by this course of action, name those in Mossley and Stalybridge. Royal Mail’s proposal to relocate the service to their Oldham delivery office is completely impractical for Mossley and Stalybridge residents. The Oldham office is already 4.9 miles away from the Ashton office, and the distance from the furthest postcode I believe to be affected is 7.1 miles away from the Oldham site. A round trip of 14.2 miles.
This would be an extremely lengthy excursion via public transport, in the case of many addresses, involving two buses each way. According to the current bus time tables, from many affected addresses this would take an hour and a quarter each way. A two and half hour roundtrip to collect a parcel is completely unacceptable. Even for those fortunate enough to have a car, this would be a highly inconvenient hour long round trip.
I am deeply concerned about the impact this will have on constituents, especially those with disabilities, those with busy working lives and/or caring responsibilities, and those running a small business. I am deeply disappointed that Royal Mail is taking decisions such as this which evidently do not have customers and communities at heart. Maintaining Ashton Sorting Office is crucial to support both our local economy and local social inclusion.
This is a well-used, much needed sorting office of key significance and value to local people. Please sign my petition and put pressure on Royal Mail to keep Ashton Sorting Office open!
