HIlls alive with music during Whit Friday Brass Band Contests

Brass Band THE villages around Stalybridge came alive with music on Friday, as hundreds of musicians took part in the Whit Friday Brass Band Contest.

The contests, which date back more than 100 years, are traditionally held in a number of villages in and around Stalybridge.

And they have become a magnet for music-lovers, musicians and spectators from across the region.

MP Jonathan Reynolds was among those cheering on the bands choosing to compete at both Heyrod and Stalybridge Labour Club this year.

And following the competition, he said: "The Whit Friday Contests are undoubtedly one of the highlights of the brass band world. And they are a local tradition that we can all be proud of.

"Each short performance is the result of months of hard work and dedication by the bands. And it is a real pleasure to watch them compete.

"As well as attracting brass enthusiasts and musicians from across the North West, they are a wonderful opportunity for local people to experience live music.

"And their performances are proof of what can be achieved when communities come together and are focussed around a common goal.

"The Whit Friday Brass band Contests are a wonderful tradition - and one that I hope will continue for many years to come."
