In Hyde Police Station
In Hyde Police Station

Huge thanks to Greater Manchester Police who allowed me to accompany them on the Friday night shift last night in Hyde and Stalybridge. This is something I’ve always wanted to experience but was particularly keen to do following the amount of anti-social behaviour and other crime we’ve been dealing with in the constituency this year.

I wanted to see for myself the challenges that come in on a Friday night and the resources available to deal with them. I was really pleased to see the new shift system being trialed in Tameside and Oldham gave us more resources than other GM boroughs, but it was still stark to hear just how the cuts of the last few years have affected things.

Incidents I witnessed last night includes a car seized for the driver having no insurance, a domestic violence call-out, and a vulnerable young person found and returned home.

The police really do deal with a huge amount, and sometimes the work they’re doing can’t be fully revealed to the public. But the public need to know just how dedicated and skilled our local officers are. Between the neighbourhood teams who patrol the streets, to the response teams who respond to the 999 and 101 calls, they’re doing a job for us and I can say they always get back to me when I pass on concerns from constituents.

Thanks to all the officers who hosted me last night and the rest of GMP for all their work.

My little boy Arthur is desperate to be a police officer or a firefighter- he is very jealous of my work experience and I’ve had to promise his own visit one day!
