After everything we have been through over the last year, I know elections are not at the top of people’s minds right now. But as the Government have decided the elections will go ahead on the 6th May I wanted to give you three clear reasons for voting Labour this year:

1 Re-elect Mayor Andy Burnham

I’m told in some places people don’t even know if they’ve got a Mayor, but that isn’t the case here in Greater Manchester. Andy has been a champion and advocate for us all from the moment he was elected, but during the crisis he has been more important than ever.

Can you remember when the Government wanted to put Greater Manchester into regional lockdown, but only support furloughed workers with 67% of their salary when it was 80% when the rest of the country was involved? Andy just refused to accept we should get second-class treatment.

After years of campaigning by local residents, our Labour councillors and myself, I’m delighted that Andy has now announced that Greater Manchester will take back control of our bus network. That means joined-up ticketing, affordable fares and routes being determined by the public not by the profits of companies.

Andy always stands up for this area and we need to be there to re-elect him on May 6th.

2 Tameside has stepped up

Tameside Council has supported the whole community throughout this crisis. Despite the Government failing to live up to its early promises to fund ‘whatever it takes’, Tameside Council has done what was needed to protect people and help limit infection.

Tameside was found to be the best performing council in the country for tackling rough sleeping with over 250 people helped off the streets.  The work of our local vaccination centres, delivered by the Public Health team at the Council in conjunction with the local NHS, has been outstanding.

As well as that, the Council has continued its investment on non-pandemic priorities, such as the new swimming pool in Hyde which is set to open this summer as well as the recent news that we have secured a grant of £300k to regenerate the old police station in Stalybridge.  This is exactly what we need as we come out of the pandemic.
