MP Jonathan Reynolds has welcomed the arrival of a new 'pop-up' style butcher's shop in Stalybridge town centre.
The Stalybridge and Hyde MP officially opened the new Mettricks outlet on Saturday, alongside owner John Mettrick. And he saw first-hand the range of fresh meats that are going to be on sale by Mettricks, on Melbourne Street, every Saturday for the foreseeable future.
The concept of the 'pop-up' shop was outlined by retail expert Mary Portas, in The Portas Review, which was published earlier this year.
The concept – which can involve the taking over of an empty shop on a temporary basis - enables businesses to have a presence on the High Street without the costs or investment associated with traditional shops.
It can lead to the expansion of the range of stores for the shopper and enable businesses to test a new market. The new Mettricks outlet is the first so-called 'pop-up' shop to open in Tameside.
MP Mr Reynolds, who is a member of the Stalybridge Town Team and who has encouraged the butcher’s to operate in the town, says the move is another step forward for plans to regenerate the area.
He said: "As part of the Stalybridge Town Team, traders, residents, community groups and civic leaders are working to ensure the town has a strong future.
“The Team is committed to making sure Stalybridge is attractive to visitors – whether they are looking to shop, to meet friends and socialise or to wander around the canal.
“Its work has already led to the launch of the regular farmers’ markets, the installation of dozens of hanging baskets and initiatives to keep the canal and surrounding areas clear of litter and debris. And the Team is continuing to look at ways to make the town more attractive.
“Shoppers have told the Team they missed having an independent butcher’s in the town – and the Team has played a crucial role in encouraging Mettricks to trade in the town.”
Mettricks is an award-winning business which has been trading for more than 100 years and which has shops in Glossop and Hadfield. The new ‘pop-up’ shop is Mettricks first outlet in Tameside.
Commenting on the opening John Mettrick, from Mettricks, said: “We are very pleased to be opening a ‘pop-up’ shop in Stalybridge.
“The feedback from customers who attended on Saturday was fantastic, with many commenting on how they are delighted to see a quality butcher return to the town.
“We look forward to extending our offering to customers over the coming weeks, especially in the run up to Christmas.”
