Jonathan Reynolds was elected as the Member of Parliament for Stalybridge and Hyde at the 2010 General Election. Prior to this he was an elected member of Tameside Council, representing the Longdendale ward, which is within the Stalybridge and Hyde constituency. He also worked as a solicitor in the Manchester office of law firm Addleshaw Goddard.
Born and brought up in Houghton-le-Spring, a former coal-mining area that lies between Sunderland and Durham in the North East of England, Jonathan attended Houghton Kepier Comprehensive School and City of Sunderland College before moving to the North West to read Politics and Modern History at Manchester University in 1998. After graduation he stayed in the North West, working in a number of roles in local and central government before attending BPP Law School in Manchester to achieve his legal qualifications. He is a strong supporter of making sure the professions, particularly politics and the law, are open to people from all backgrounds.
In Parliament he has served as an Opposition Assistant Whip covering the shadow justice and constitutional affairs team, and in October 2011 was appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Leader of the Opposition Ed Miliband. His parliamentary interests include manufacturing, the armed forces and special needs education.
Jonathan lives in Stalybridge with his wife Claire and has two children. His constituency campaigns have included opposition to policing cuts in Tameside, support for local town centres and working with neighbouring MPs to highlight the need for a bypass in Longdendale. Outside of politics, his interests include football, films and gardening. He was the proud winner of the first-time entrant category in the horticulture section at the Mottram Show in 2011.
As well as the Labour Party, Jonathan is a member of the Co-operative Party, the shopworkers' union USDAW and the Unite union.
