It’s been another busy week in the life of an MP.

On Monday I met with railway officials for an update about the Transpennine Route Upgrade programme. This is the key upgrade of the rail line through Stalybridge and Mossley. Despite being well past its original schedule, it is an essential infrastructure upgrade for us in Tameside.

You may remember last year when the line had to be blockaded to install the key electrification measures at Stalybridge. That work has gone well and the progress along the line continues. I reiterated my desire to see the next stage feature a significant upgrade to Mossley station, especially around accessibility. I know this is something long called for and much needed.

By the time this programme completes, it will allow us to have six trains an hour between Leeds/York and Manchester, plus two  additional stopping services and a significant upgrade in freight capacity.

Also on Monday I also made a really interesting visit Boots UK with Keir Starmer to talk to pharmaceutical and retail staff about their important work and the daily challenges they face.

Labour’s mission to reform the NHS will revitalise our pharmacies and boost our high streets, with a focus on preventing illness and delivering more care in your community. Prevention is both better than cure and a sounder investment would be good for public wellbeing, good for NHS budgets and good for our high streets.

Then on Tuesday morning I flew to Switzerland where alongside Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves I am attending the World Economic Forum in Switzerland (even snowier than Stalybridge!). This annual event is a meeting of politicians, business leaders, academics and campaigning organisations to discuss business and economic issues.

I’m going because there is a job to do. Attracting investment to the UK to improve our economy and living standards after a decade and a half of stagnation is essential. Despite the tremendous innovation and science base in the UK, we are currently bottom of all G7 countries for business investment. I see my job as Shadow Business Secretary as getting out there to make the case for why people should bring their investments here and what opportunities there will be under a Labour government.

I will be here for three days and have engagements and meetings planned on industrial strategy, renewable energy, trade, investment and more. I am certain that, with a change of Government, we can get our economy moving faster and see loving standards rise for a  better future.
