It was wonderful to visit the National Theatre just before Christmas. The NT is a national treasure; the only theatre in the UK to make every single costume and prop on site in their impressive workshops, offering quality apprenticeships in everything from wig-making to reprographics. As well as home-growing talent, the National Theatre frequently exports its successes to Broadway and beyond, showcasing British creativity to the world. A huge thank you to Executive Director Kate Varah and Strategy Lead Chris Murphy for showing me around. Britain’s creative industries are worth £178 billion worth of growth every year, £50 billion worth of exports, two million jobs, and 750,000 businesses, but with costs escalating, the economic challenges are immense. Labour’s industrial strategy plans to bring the sector change, hope and optimism.
