This week I’m in an unseasonably sunny Liverpool, where myself and colleagues from across the country have come together for Labour Party Conference.

This is an exciting time for the Labour Party: our biggest and best attended conference ever. We have put in the work to once again be the voice of the British people. Many Brits are willing to put their faith in us again as a party of credible, caring and courageous party of government, and we will not let them down.

As I told the Conference in my speech yesterday, this is a worrying time for people. There’s not a lot of good news that comes out of this Government. What can you say about a Government that starting building a new rail line between Manchester and central London, and can’t get it to either?

And in response to the Government’s u-turn on it’s own green agenda, the fact is this will cost the British people money. More gas and less renewable will cost British industry substantially more. Less insulation and fewer energy efficiency targets, means higher energy bills for you and your family.

But businesses were also right to point out that flip-flopping is no way to run a country. How can we expect businesses to invest for the long-term, when they can’t rely on a single word of Government policy? Businesses need ambition, they need commitment and they need consistency. Under a Labour Government, they will get it.

I was proud to announce a good example of that in Liverpool this week. The automotive industry is the jewel in the crown of British manufacturing, so a Labour Government would secure domestic battery making capacity, invest in gigafactories, and get shovels in the ground. Labour will also invest in the industry’s greatest strength – its workforce – fixing the apprenticeship levy and creating 80,000 more skilled jobs.

Another good example is Royal Mail; a great British institution, but facing an uncertain future. If I were Business Secretary in a Labour government, I would make sure Royal Mail is sustainable, successful, provides good employment and is at the heart of our communities.

From our manufacturers to our posties, today’s Labour Party is proudly pro-worker, and proudly pro-business. Industry and employees pulling together to build a better Britain. And frankly, with the state this country is in, rebuilding Britain cannot wait another day.

This is the message I have been taken to Labour Party Conference. As ever, I’d welcome your views as we seek to carve out an ambitious alternative future for Britain.
