This week saw the sad collapse of British Volt, and I’ve been busy holding the Government to account on their failings to get ahead in the emerging green automotive industry. The collapse was not inevitable; it is a sign of the absence of any form of industrial strategy from this government, as I told The Northern Echo. The rest of the world is speeding ahead with manufacturing innovations like automotive gigafactories. The Tory Government appears to be playing a game of Snakes and Snakes with the British economy in which every sector is a loser. I discussed this more with Sky News. You can also watch me leading on this in the Commons here.

Meanwhile, after 3 PMs, 4 Chancellors and 3 Business Secretaries in a year, we’ve had chaos on top of stagnation. The UK economy is struggling. A new report from Make UK shows manufacturers pay a premium for doing business in the UK. Britain has the lowest levels of business investment in the G7. I asked the Business Secretary when they will get their act together?

It was also great to visit Sheffield yesterday and address Yorkshire Business Forum about our plans to work with businesses and workers to electrify the economy under a Labour government. Thank you to South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard for the warm welcome.
